About the Author
Verda Beth Martell is the Chair of Scenic Technology for the Department of Theatre and the Technical Director for Krannert Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Illinois. Beth is a member of the board of directors for the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, for whom she has presented a number of workshops including the Physics of Theatre series with her research partner (and husband) Dr. Eric Martell. Along with her theoretical work developing mathematical models to predict the action of theatrical machines, Beth also scripts and programs in multiple languages, including ladder logic, LISP, and the National Instruments graphical programming environment LabVIEW. She is an ETCP Certified Rigger - Theatre and an ETCP Recognized Trainer. Beth holds an MFA in theater technology from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and a BS in theatre from Illinois State University.Eric C. Martell is an Associate Professor of Physics at Millikin University, where he has taught for more than 11 years. His areas of research include the Physics of Theatre Project, Physics Education Research, and whatever his students are interested in. Eric has presented material related to the Physics of Theatre project numerous times, including at USITT meetings as well as regional and national meetings of the American Association of Physics Teachers. He works extensively on integrating physics into interdisciplinary projects, including the Physics of Sports, Science in Museums, and Engineering Design. Eric has worked for more than a decade on assessment of student learning, both across the curriculum and in physics, and has attended multiple workshops focused on developing faculty expertise in utilizing research-based pedagogies in physics education. He holds an MS and a PhD in Physics from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a BS in Physics and Mathematics from North Central College, and has been teaching physics full-time for more than 16 years at colleges and universities from coast to coast.
