The history of divination is long and vast. Since time immemorial humans have sought to understand their place in the universe, comprehend cycles of being, interpret their relationships, find meaning in their existence, gaze into the future and see the unseen. The term comes from the Latin divinare, “to foresee” or “receive messages from the gods”.
The oldest and most comprehensive writings about divination come from the Chinese Book of Changes the Yi Jing (c.1142 BC), which details a style of prophesying that evolved from even older practices of casting bones into a fire and reading patterns on their charred surfaces.
Divination methods and ritual tools have developed with time, necessity and fashion, as people sought to find the best path, guarantee their crops or secure their futures. When seeking insights into political winds of change and other kinds of weather before an important marriage or battle, a soothsayer or shaman would be consulted to read the auguries in the intestines of sacrificed animals. Today we have other tools at hand, such as polls, predictive analytics and meteorology, but divination remains stubbornly popular, especially within personality and relationship dynamics.
Humans are by nature questing creatures, always seeking knowledge of potential tomorrows. Many people, especially in times of uncertainty or vulnerability, find that connecting with the greater plan can help them feel more accepting and in control of their lives. Divination shines a guiding light on a divinely recommended line of action to secure the best possible outcomes.
